I started scraping my tongue. Intentionally. I even bought a small metal wish bin tool for the purpose. Ideally, the habit of repertoire repertoire is really surprising considering where I was three years ago. But I don't do it every day. To be honest, I don't even floss every day, but that's definitely one of my goals.

I realize that I have autism and ADHD. That’s probably why I tend to wander in the middle of an ideal oral care routine. I start brushing my teeth and "Look! A squirrel!" happens about two minutes later.

It helps me focus to watch a few reels on social media while I go through the whole Floss/Scrape/Oil Pull/Brush/The Rigamarole. I saw Toni Nagy recently revisiting her experiences. Cleansing my mouth hole.

Then it occurred to me: as humans, we spend a special amount of time dealing with various bodily openings.

A Series of Tubes

It’s one of those things that we often don’t think about the truth of. Almost without exception, the first thing we do when we wake up is take care of one or more of our openings.

Then we start the hole-piercing day.

Coffee? Morning burrito? Into the mouth hole!

Want to know what’s happening outside the domain and dome? Go to where the eyes and ear holes are fed!

Meanwhile, the nostrils function to bring in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. A simple hole’s involuntary trick, right?

No matter who you are, no matter what you’re doing in your life, you have a hole underneath.
