Last night I stayed in Dangtu. While I was sleeping soundly, I suddenly heard a "pop" sound from the floor in the room, as if something had fallen to the ground. At that moment, I didn't pay much attention and fell back asleep. Just in that half-dreaming state, I suddenly heard another "pop." I was startled and thought, "What was that?" After a while, I heard two more "pops," the first one was loud, like the sound of bamboo cracking; the second one was slightly smaller, like a chess piece falling to the ground and then bouncing back up before falling again.

I could no longer sleep, so I listened carefully. Soon after, the sound appeared again. Sometimes it was one sound, sometimes it was "pop, pop" two to three times, and the most was four consecutive sounds. The first sound was particularly loud, waking my wife from her sleep, who asked me, "What was that sound?" I was worried she would be scared, so I said, "It sounds like the floor is cracking!" After hearing this, my wife got up to use the bathroom and then climbed back into bed to sleep soundly again. But I couldn't sleep at all because every time I was in a daze, I kept hearing that "pop" sound... I estimated that it was close to morning when I vaguely saw the room's door creak open, and I was suddenly gripped by a nightmare. I called out, "Uh—uh—," but just a few calls in, I felt my wife tugging at my arm, and I suddenly woke up, feeling heavy in my heart, as if someone was watching me in the room, but I couldn't see him or her.

In the morning, I said to my wife, "Let's go back to sleep tonight!"

My wife asked, "What's wrong?"

I said, "Didn't you hear any sounds last night?"

"I think I heard four sounds, one of which was the loudest," my wife turned to look at me, asking with some doubt, "Wasn't that the sound of the floor cracking?"

I looked at her and said, "I feel something is off. I always feel that this room isn't quite right. Can you hear? There are no sounds now, right? If it was the sound of the floor cracking, then why is there no sound now that it's bright outside?"

My wife said, "Maybe it was because it was colder at night?!"

"But the morning temperature should also be very low!"

"……"

Then my wife said, "Who told you to take someone else's Buddhist scriptures without donating money! The Bodhisattva is very powerful!"

Hearing her say this, I thought: Maybe that's it! So I said, "I'll go to the temple later and donate some money, so he won't come to bother me again."

Later, when we returned to my mother-in-law's place, my wife said she wanted to tell her mother about this incident. I said it would be better not to mention it, because it was originally nothing, and I was afraid that if we talked about it, something might really happen.

But my wife couldn't help it and eventually told my mother-in-law about it. She also told my mother-in-law that it might be because I took the book from the temple without paying. So my mother-in-law advised me to go to the temple to burn some incense and donate some money! Hearing her say this, I no longer hesitated. After breakfast, I casually walked towards the Great Compassion Monastery.

When I arrived at the monastery, I first went to the Mahavira Hall to burn incense, bow, and donate some money. Then I deliberately asked a nun, "Are there any books about Buddhist scriptures here?" The nun, seeing my inquiry, said there were books in the front hall, and I could choose freely.

So, I followed her words and went to the front hall. Seeing the two kings on either side glaring with wide eyes, I quickly clasped my hands together and bowed, saying, "Bodhisattva, I have already donated money! Don't be so stingy! It's just to take a look at a book!"

Saying this, I walked over to the pile of books and started flipping through them. Since I had already donated money, I might as well take another book. Just as I was thinking this, the nun walked in and said, "Amitabha, do you like reading Buddhist scriptures?" I replied, "Just taking a casual look, I don't really understand." "Oh! Reading Buddhist scriptures is good!" She smiled, as if she wanted to say something more to me. Seeing her like this, I quickly grabbed a copy of "Journey to Hell" and hurriedly ran away.
