Last year, before the Ghost Festival, I crashed my shared bicycle into a roadside guardrail, resulting in a fracture. However, there were some strange omens before this incident, and after it happened, I also dreamed of some incredible things.

Before the Ghost Festival, people in Guangzhou like to burn paper in front of their buildings, especially in front of some old houses, which makes the atmosphere very eerie.

Every time I go home, I have to pass by some uninhabited old houses, especially after work when it’s usually dark. I always feel like something is watching me. Once, when I passed by an empty house, I couldn't help but sneeze, and what happened next startled me; a huge echo came from inside that empty house, which was also the sound of my sneeze. I found it strange because usually, sneezing in that place wouldn’t produce such a loud echo.

People were already burning paper outside the old houses on both sides, and a delivery person passed by, looking like there weren’t many people around. After turning a corner, there was another old house, and one of them was inhabited. A woman was burning paper in front of the old house, while her daughter was bouncing around, looking very strange.

After I got home, I told my wife about these seemingly abnormal phenomena. I said, "Does this mean something bad will happen next?"

My wife said not to overthink it and just to be more cautious lately, as many people have such customs before the Ghost Festival.

The next day at work, as I was about to leave, I received a sudden notice from the company that the boss organized a team-building event, and everyone was to go to a nearby restaurant to eat. I couldn’t refuse this, so I went to eat with my colleagues.

During the meal, the boss organized many drinking games. I wasn’t in a good mood and ended up drinking too much. I probably drank several bottles of red wine in one go, and then I staggered out with my colleagues. It was already past nine at night, and after more than an hour of travel, it was around ten when I passed a guardrail and noticed a shadow rushing towards me. As I tried to dodge, everything went dark in front of me, and by the time I realized it, I had already crashed into the guardrail.

I thought to myself, if I had left work normally, this wouldn’t have happened. But at that moment, saying anything was pointless. Later, I underwent orthopedic surgery at the provincial second hospital, and when I rode past the place where I sneezed and echoed, two children were actually playing and rushing towards me, almost causing me to crash again. This happened several times, making me suspect that there was some kind of dirty thing in that place.

That night, I dreamed of two little ghosts. One of them was kind-hearted and didn’t trouble me, while the other insisted on entering the room. That little ghost was very strong; I hadn’t even locked the door before it was about to rush in. I then punched, and I suddenly woke up in pain, realizing I had punched the bed. Another time, I got so angry in a dream that I was using my fist against the opponent's forehead, and I woke up in pain again, only to find out I was actually pushing my fist against the wall.

After these strange events, my wife returned to her family’s home. During that time, I didn’t turn off the lights when I slept; I kept them on all night, but it didn’t stop the little ghosts from bothering me. My wife said it was because my yang energy was weak after the surgery, and these dirty things were bullying me.

Speaking of which, this house indeed has problems; it has a U-shaped structure, located at the bottom of the U, and the adjacent room has always been an empty village. Even the glass in the windows is damaged and hasn’t been repaired, which seems to have been the case for more than a year or two. As the saying goes, a house that has been empty for too long easily attracts some things, and living next to these dirty things, it’s not surprising that strange events occur. Coincidentally, it was the Ghost Festival, and these little ghosts came to gather, making the yin energy inside even stronger, including some evil spirits, naturally leading to some outrageous actions.

Fortunately, the house is rented, and I can move out when the lease is up. If it were my own house, it would be troublesome. The house is like a cave dwelling; even during the day, it’s dark, and I need to keep the lights on to see things. Due to poor air circulation and high humidity, the room often gets moldy. In the dead of night, I often hear strange sounds, like human groans, animal cries, and the miserable cries of stray cats, along with barking from someone’s dog. All of this seems to indicate that there’s something wrong with this place, that it’s unclean.

This is an old house from the 1970s and 1980s, mostly inhabited by elderly people who are nearing the end of their lives. They are filled with decay, and the rooms often have dead small animals, like geckos, and the smell of rotting corpses. So, from any angle, it seems easy to attract some unclean things here.

When I first moved in, we often quarreled over very trivial matters, like the speed of cooking, etc. Once, while I was cooking seriously, my wife, who was resting in the bedroom, suddenly appeared behind me without warning and spoke loudly, startling me so much that I shivered. All these abnormal phenomena indicate that the magnetic field in this room is not good.

At the same time, the previous tenant left some inexplicable ornaments, including some mouse heads placed under the sofa and refrigerator. Although these mouse heads were fake, seeing them while cleaning still made me feel very disgusted.

When the weather gradually turned humid, I noticed that a layer of black mold began to spread rapidly on the walls of both the living room and bedroom. If no one takes care of it, it won’t be long before the entire house is completely surrounded by mold. I really can’t understand what the designers of this building were thinking; there are serious problems from both a feng shui perspective and a living experience perspective. No wonder the landlord’s family doesn’t want to live here; they would rather rent a place outside than come here.

Later, I started a short video live streaming and content creation plan in this house. Strangely, no matter how hard I tried, the results were minimal. Once I left this house, I would see much better results. This made me convinced that there was some kind of bad luck in that eerie house, constantly suppressing my talent and ability.

Finally, when it was time to move out, I left decisively. Due to the unreliable data from the electricity meter, the landlord said we could settle it later, but I certainly wouldn’t agree. She might want to hold onto the deposit until everything was settled. So, I immediately proposed to pay the landlord an estimated amount, which far exceeded the actual usage costs, making the landlord very happy, and she immediately agreed. Once everything was settled, my wife and I left right away. When I arrived at the new place, it immediately started pouring rain, temporarily trapping the landlord in her small house. I breathed a sigh of relief, glad that it wasn’t us trapped inside. Leaving that place felt like escaping from a disaster, which was so comforting.
