" Is it worth it?" I loaded two pizza boxes into a red pizza bag with Doordash emblazoned on top. I turned to see an older gentleman looking at me with curiosity and skepticism.

"There are downsides, but you meet a lot of great people." I told him, slyly hinting at the fact that I had just met him. I wasn't sure if he picked up on my clever hint. He clearly didn't expect that response. He seemed to contemplate the value of what I had just said, looking slightly down. I quickly made my exit and went on my way.

I started making hedge bets to protect myself when I began buffering or doing better work. I have been unemployed four times in the past nine years. Once was a layoff, and the rest were by choice. I learned to have a few safety nets in a world of uncertainty. So, I signed up for Doordash.

I knew what that older gentleman was really asking. He wanted to know if you can make good money with Doordash. I’m sure many people would be just as curious, and if the time is worth it, it’s advantageous enough to have wear and tear on the car and be able to quit a day job. So far, I’m still learning the system and making enough to pay the bills.

But money isn’t everything.

I love rolling down the windows and driving. After 22 years of farming, I need some connection…
